New medical journal article spotlights NKC’s role in home dialysis history

Northwest Kidney Centers and our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Matt Rivara were featured recently in a new Annals of Internal Medicine article examining the history of home dialysis in the United States. The article cites Dr. Rivara’s research on home dialysis and the challenges some patients face in getting access to it. It also highlights Northwest Kidney Centers’ roots as the Seattle Artificial Kidney Center, where home hemodialysis was first developed in the 1960s.

The article looks at how changes in health care policies, payment systems, and other factors have affected home dialysis over time. While home dialysis can give patients more freedom and flexibility, many still face barriers such as housing needs, caregiver support, and access to education.
