A new year is a fresh start and a great time to set some specific kidney-friendly goals!

Eating a healthy diet and staying active can help you maintain kidney function and feel better overall, whether you have healthy kidneys, have been told you have chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis or have a transplanted kidney.

Here are four kidney-friendly ideas to live a healthier life.

  • Try reducing your daily salt intake by exploring salt-free seasonings: Basil, dill, ginger, lemon juice, rosemary, smoked paprika, tarragon or other fun herbs and spices. Look for “unsalted” or “low-sodium” options when you buy canned foods.
  • Cook more plant-based recipes. Check out some cool recipes at nwkidney.org and at the National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org).
  • Set a fitness goal that helps you. Whether your goal is standing up an extra 5 times per day or walking/running several miles each day, your kidneys and your whole body thanks you for moving!
  • Engage family and friends in your new choices. Talk about your goals and let the power of community help propel you forward.
