Meats, Fish, Poultry, and EggsThese are the protein foods that you need to
keep your muscles in good shape while you lose extra fat. When you are on dialysis, you
need to eat just the right amount every day. For your best health, you need ounces of
protein per day divided between 2 to 3 meals. For more information, ask your
nutritionist for protein guidelines.
Here is a list of low-calorie ideas. Check off those you will try!
- Trim the fat off meats and take the skin off poultry. Serious fat-watchers can cut back
even more by removing fat and skin before cooking. This way, fat won't seep into the meat
while it cooks. Then low-fat sauces, tangy marinades, and seasonings like herbs, spices,
garlic or ginger, and lemon or lime juice, have a chance to really sink into the meat.
- Broil, bake, or roast on a rack so that fat drips off. If you are pan frying, use the
smallest amount of fat, or try using a non-stick pan spray. Avoid deep-fried foods,
especially those with breading or batter coating.
- Avoid fatty meats like sausage, bacon, hot dogs, and luncheon meats.
- Eat more low-fat meats like lean beef (round, sirloin, loin, or chuck), lean pork
(tenderloin, leg, or shoulder), chicken, turkey, fish, and seafood.
