Helpful Weight Loss Tips

Here are some other helpful tips. Choose the ones you will try:

  • Eat a balanced diet from the 4 food groups every day. Never eliminate any one type of food. It can be miserable to be deprived! But do keep high-calorie snacks and desserts out of sight so you aren't tempted.
  • Eat a wide variety of foods to keep your diet interesting. It's boring to eat the same foods all the time.
  • Eat regular meals. If you skip meals, you might get so hungry that you snack or eat extra food at the next meal.
  • Space your meals throughout the day instead of eating one big meal. That way your body will burn up the food energy as the day goes on.
  • Plan to have your snacks when you have hunger twinges between meals. Plan on low-calorie snacks every day, like vegetable sticks or fresh fruit. You can save part of your meal such as the appetizer, salad, or dessert for an afternoon or late evening snack.
  • Learn to tell the difference between hunger and appetite. You can have an appetite for food without really being hungry. Pass up second helpings, and don't eat when you're not hungry. Accept the fact that you may frequently experience hunger as you begin your diet.
  • Eat slowly. Take time to enjoy what you're eating. Avoid eating your meals in tense or hectic places.
  • Measure or weigh foods until you're used to portion sizes. Measure or weigh foods after cooking.
  • Reward yourself as you reach each 5 pound weight-loss goal (or whatever you have set). Avoid using food as a reward. Instead, purchase a small treat like a special soap or earrings, a movie or book, or take extra time for reading or playing.
