The Right Weigh . . . Set a weight goal which gives you a few months to lose a few pounds. Be realistic. You didn't put those extra pounds on overnight, so don't expect to lose them overnight. When you combine portion control with light but frequent exercise, you can plan to lose about one pound (1/2 kilo) per week at the most. Quicker weight loss usually is loss of muscle, not fat. Your weight loss will not show up on a day-to-day basis. Your dry weight will probably be adjusted every few weeks. You may get dehydrated during dialysis if you aim for a dry weight which is too low for you. Be sure to keep your doctor and dialysis staff informed of your weight loss. A lot of people lose a number of pounds but then suddenly stop losing weight. Sometimes you hit a plateau before your body changes its setting for your weight. You need to keep watching how much food you eat while your body adjusts itself and you then lose more weight. |
