Low-Sodium Shopping

Many foods in a grocery store have salt added to them already. Buying foods without this extra salt can be tricky. However, this is an easy way to lower your use of sodium. If you haven't noticed low-sodium foods in your store, ask where they are!

Most low-sodium items cost only a little more than the regular kind, but some are much more expensive. Using some of the low-salt foods can help you to lower your sodium intake. Try the low-sodium version of:

Bouillon
Canned vegetables
Catsup
Chili sauce
Peanut butter
Soy sauce
Tomato juice
Tomato sauce
Worcestershire sauce

Low-sodium canned tomato sauce and vegetables are usually also found with the regular versions. They are often cheaper in the regular aisle than in the special diet foods section.

Other unsalted foods are found around the store. Look for unsalted butter or margarine. Many types of crackers are made with less salt. There are also some that are sodium-free so check the labels.
