Salt (or sodium chloride) is found mainly in convenience foods. Foods that do not spoil easily are usually higher in sodium. Bacon, which is high in sodium, will stay fresh longer than hamburger. Canned or instant foods have more sodium than the same things made from scratch.

When you finish this section you will be able to identify foods you like that are high in sodium, and ways they can be worked into your diet:

Check the foods that you think are higher in sodium.

  • Instant scalloped potatoes

or

  • Boiled potatoes

  • Frozen turkey pie

or

  • Homemade turkey

  • Homemade spaghetti

or

  • Canned spaghetti

If you chose instant scalloped potatoes, frozen turkey pie, and canned spaghetti, you are right!

The following pages show a list of foods grouped by high, medium, and low-sodium content. Check the ones you enjoy eating.
