Protein is used to build body tissues (bones,
muscle, skin, hair, etc.). It also helps to fight infections and keeps your body fluids in
balance by keeping your albumin level in a good range. When you are on dialysis, some
protein is washed out of your blood. Your diet must supply the protein needed for normal
body building plus the amount lost during dialysis.
Eating too much protein is not good either. Extra protein will build up
in your body and become "toxic". This can make you quite sick. To stay healthy,
you need the number of protein servings which you've learned in this section. This is the
right amount for you. Start thinking of ways you can get just the right amount of protein
in your meals.
