Some people on dialysis don't like red meats. If they do not appeal to you, there are other ways to enjoy protein and meet your needs. Here are some suggestions. Check the ones that sound good to you.

Use meat in homemade dishes which "mask" the flavor of meat with spices or sauces:

  • Homemade lasagna.
  • Homemade spaghetti with meat sauce.
  • Homemade beef stroganoff.
  • Homemade tacos, chile, or pizza.
  • Other favorites of yours: ____________________

Try other protein foods you like:

  • Angel food cake.
  • BBQ pork chops.
  • Cheese souffle.
  • Chicken and dumplings.
  • Fried fish.
  • Homemade bean salad

  • Milkshakes
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Peanut butter cookies
  • Roast turkey

  • Serve meat cold in sandwiches or salads.
  • Stay away from the kitchen when meat is cooking. Odors may decrease your appetite.
  • Use seasonings, spices, sauces, or gravies to improve the flavor of meats.
  • Blend powdered milk into casseroles or peanut butter.
  • Chop, grate, or slice pieces of meat, fish, poultry, or cheese into salads, soup, or noodles.
  • Nutritional supplements, which are high in protein, help when you aren't eating enough protein for your body. Ask your dietitian about them; some are all right for dialysis patients.
