Dairy Substitutes

If you are fond of dairy foods, it may be difficult to limit your intake. Here are some tips for decreasing the phosphorus in these foods. Check the ones you will try.

  • Use non-dairy creamer or milk substitutes on cereals and in creamed soups, puddings and other recipes that call for milk. (Note: some of these products will not set up when made into pudding or custard.)
  • 2 c milk substitute = 1 phosphorus serving
  • Use cream cheese in sandwiches, toast, and casseroles in place of regular cheese or cottage cheese.
  • 2/3 c cream cheese = 1 phosphorus serving.
  • Use sour cream or imitation sour cream on fruits or in dips to replace yogurt.
  • 1 1/2 c sour cream = 1 phosphorus serving.
  • Use nutritional supplements such as Ensure Plus, Nepro, or Sustacal Plus in place of milk for cooking and drinking. Ask your dietitian for information about these products.
  • 1 1/2 c nutritional supplement = 1 phosphorus serving.

These tips can be used daily to decrease the amount of phosphorus foods you are using. For example, look at this high phosphorus meal:

tuna and swiss cheese sandwich
butterscotch pudding (1 c)
milk (1 glass)

There are three phosphorus foods in this meal: cheese, pudding, and milk. To lower the phosphorus, you could substitute cream cheese for the swiss cheese, substitute juice or soda pop for the cup of milk, and count the pudding as your one high-phosphorus food for the day.

When you make changes like these, you should have no trouble limiting the amount of phosphorus in your diet.
