Handling Low Blood Sugar

Despite everything you do, you may occasionally have a low blood sugar reaction. This is often when you skip a meal, when you don't feel well enough to eat, or when you vomit what you did eat. Everyone has different symptoms with low blood sugar. Below are some common ones. Check the ones you usually have:

  • Hunger
  • Cold sweat
  • Crankiness
  • Shaking
  • Trembling
  • Dizziness
  • Other:

If you feel these things, you should eat something that has sugar in it right away. Since liquids go more quickly into your blood, a liquid with sugar is your best choice. Check which ones you will try:

  • Fruit juice. Carry a small 6 oz. can in your purse or glove compartment. Keep some on hand at home, too. Any juice will do. Just remember that orange juice is higher in potassium, so grape, cranberry, and apple juice are better choices.
  • Glass of water with sugar dissolved in it. You can always carry sugar packets in your pocket for this.

Sometimes you may be somewhere where liquids aren't available. The next best thing is something with lots of sugar and not much fat. Candy bars are all right in a pinch, but because they have more fat they take longer to digest, and you need that sugar right away.

Better choices are listed here. Check the ones you will try.

  • Sugar or sugar cubes.
  • Plastic tube of glucose. Ask your pharmacist for this.
  • Plastic tube of cake decorating frosting. They are inexpensive and most grocery stores carry them.
  • Clear candies like gumdrops, jelly beans, lifesavers, etc.
