Guidelines

It is normal for you to gain some weight between dialysis treatments. Most of this weight gain is fluid. For most people an acceptable weight gain between dialysis is about 1.5-2.5 kilograms (3-5 pounds).

 

You may always replace fluids that your own kidneys get rid of plus the extra allowed for dialysis (the amount of fluid dialysis will take off). This varies, but is usually about 3 cups. To find the amount you can have, measure your urine for one day and add the 3 cups you are allowed. For example:

Now look again to see what foods and drinks you chose. They can be worked into a daily pattern. For example, you may like coffee, lemonade, orange juice, and water for your pills.
