The last thing most people on dialysis like to think about is exercise. With lower hematocrits (number of red blood cells) most people just don't feel like exercising. Yet exercise is exactly what they need! When you finish this section, you will be able to develop your own light exercise plan.

"Now wait a minute," you may say. "I can't exercise. My hematocrit's too low, I'm too tired, I might break something, my doctor said no..."

Remember, light exercise is the key word. There is no need to take up jogging or other heavy exercise. Regular light exercise gives you the same benefits, and is a little easier!

Below are some examples of light exercises. Choose the ones you like.

  • Walking briskly
  • Light gardening
  • Golf
  • Table tennis (ping pong)
  • Dancing (slow step)
  • Bowling
  • Light housework
  • Light carpentry work
  • Other activities you enjoy:
