By now you are familiar with your diet and have a good idea of what you can eat. You know how to plan ahead to work extra foods into your day. With practice you are getting so good at it you don't stop to think much about your diet. But what about the unexpected? The newspapers are always full of disasters, floods, blizzards, and earthquakes. Most of us think they'll never happen to us. Unfortunately, these disasters do happen, and if you are a person on dialysis, they become much more of an emergency. A major disaster causes additional problems for you if you count on a good water supply, easy access to a dialysis unit, telephone communication, electrical power, and perhaps, a home helper to dialyze you. Well, what if the worst happens and you can't dialyze due to transportation, power, or water problems? You must somehow keep your blood values within normal limits until you can dialyze. You can do this by changing your diet. The suggestions and meal plans which follow are not a substitute for dialysis, but will work for short periods of time (5 days or less) when you cannot dialyze. The diet is much stricter than the diet you usually follow, but remember it's just for a few days until you can dialyze. Meat and meat substitutes |
