NUTRITION: The Art of Good Eating
Diabetes and
Dialysis |
Next |
When you start comparing your dialysis diet with your diabetic diet, you may feel as many people with diabetes do: There is nothing left to eat! Remember, your goal is to plan a nutritious diet that is easy to live with. Because the two diets conflict in certain places, you may have to make compromises between them. Since you have followed your diabetic diet longer, you are probably very familiar with it. It is the new eating habits that are harder to learn. When you finish this section, you will be able to balance your two diets to help control your blood sugar and other laboratory values.

Suppose you are at a friend's house for dinner and are feeling proud of yourself for following your two diets so well. Then the hostess brings out dessert. You have your choice: a huge fruit salad with bananas, oranges, and pineapple, or a piece of cake! Which would you choose? Choose one.
They are all right answers. Even some concentrated sweets are okay when eaten with meals. It just depends on what part of your diet needs to be watched most closely at the time. These kinds of decisions are not easy to make. Sometimes they require you to make difficult choices. Practicing the choices ahead of time will make it easier. Think of other times you might have to compromise your diabetic diet and your dialysis diet. What about eating in restaurants? When you have a cold? On your birthday? Write these times down now, and think about solutions. Then when they happen you will be more prepared to deal with them. EXAMPLE:
