Step 3: Boost your appetite

Now that you know how to add more calories to your diet, here are some tips to make eating easier.

  • Eat smaller meals more often so you don't get too full.
  • Keep snacks on hand that you can get quickly or fix easily.
  • Use seasonings such as lemon juice, pepper, garlic, basil, and other spices to help improve the taste and smell of food.
  • Find which time of the day your appetite is best and eat more then. Some people can eat more in the morning, others find a late night snack works well.
  • Stay out of the kitchen and out of reach of cooking odors if you feel sick to your stomach. Strong smelling foods may take away your desire to eat.
  • Try foods that are cold or let your food cool to lukewarm.
  • Check with your doctor about drinking a glass of beer or white wine before meals to relax and help boost your appetite.
  • Vary the color of foods served on your plate. Use garnishes to make your meals more appetizing.
  • Make meal time enjoyable. Eat with your family or friends, listen to relaxing music, or dine out.
  • Motivate yourself to eat by remembering how much stronger you will feel.
