Breads and Cereals:

Homemade baked goods can often be made with less fat than is found in store-bought baked goods. You can change recipes by cutting back on the amount of fat. Use oil or margarine (and less of it) instead of butter or shortening. Also, use skim milk instead of whole milk or cream and yogurt instead of sour cream. Which low-fat choices will you try?

  • Pick low-fat crackers, like Rye Krisp, unsalted saltines or rice cakes rather than cheese- or butter-type snack crackers.
  • Use cold dry cereals without fruits and nuts or hot cereals rather than granola.
  • Choose bread, english muffins, pita, bagels, sandwich buns, or dinner rolls. Limit croissants, butter rolls, sweet rolls, pastries, or doughnuts.
