Eating Away From Home

Now - what about a special situation? Imagine you are at a friend's house for dinner. If some of your choices are high-fat foods, cut back on fat by eating smaller servings. Fill the rest of your plate with low-fat, low-calorie foods. Fill up on cereals, bread, rolls, rice, or pasta (without cream sauces). Eat as many vegetables and fruits as you can within your potassium controlled diet. Ask your nutritionist for guidelines on potassium intake.

If you like to go to restaurants, you can:

  • Go to a restaurant which offers a wide variety of foods so that you can find several low-fat foods you like that you can eat. Choose restaurants with limited menu choices less often.
  • Try to pick from the restaurant menu in the same way that you would prepare meals at home. Choose fewer fried foods, and foods with sauces, and pick low-fat types of milk and salad dressings.
  • Plan ahead for high-fat meals. If you know you're going to have a high-fat dinner, eat a low-fat breakfast and lunch.

Eating right is a matter of making the right choices. Look at the way you eat now. Can you think of some small changes that will lower the amount of fat you eat?
