This workbook is a guide to help you do two things: plan nutritious meals you enjoy, and keep your body functioning at its best. When you finish this workbook you will be able to maintain good nutrition with dialysis and still eat as normal a diet as possible.

When you are on dialysis, the food you eat becomes even more important than before. When your kidneys fail, waste products which normally leave the body as urine now build up in the blood. Dialysis removes most of them, but without proper management of your diet, dialysis is not enough. Following your diet can also help keep your blood pressure and weight normal.

Your diet depends on your kidney function and dialysis. What is right for others is not always right for you. If you change to a different kind of dialysis, or if your kidney function changes, your diet will probably change also.

At first, your diet may seem very complicated and you may feel like giving up. Don't worry; most people feel this way. Be patient and practice. It's like learning to ride a bicycle: once you learn how, you never forget!

To help you use this booklet remember the following abbreviations have been used:

c = cup = 8 ounces
tsp = teaspoon
Tbsp = tablespoon
mg = milligrams
gm = grams
oz = ounces
