Eating away from home can be fun and enjoyable, even when following a special diet like yours. Just remember these guidelines:

  • Choose restaurants that serve a wide variety of foods.
  • Call ahead if you want foods prepared special for you (without salt, sauces, etc.)
  • Carry the sample menu with you for suggestions of food choices.
  • Read the restaurant menu carefully, watching out for high-sodium or high-potassium foods.
  • Ask how food is prepared when you're not sure.

Most restaurants are more than happy to accommodate your needs when they know you are on a special diet. Ask for their help so eating out can be enjoyable for you.

Why should I try to eat away from home?

Dialysis has probably changed your life in many more ways than you ever imagined. Having to re-work your diet may be one of the biggest changes you've made. Eating in restaurants, or with friends or family, is a normal part of everyone's life. It gives you a chance to relax, take it easy, and enjoy yourself. Trying to make your life as normal as possible is a good reason for learning to eat wisely in many situations.
