Nutrition, Diet and Exercise

People who have been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are often frightened about the future. They wonder how their lives will be impacted by reduced kidney function, and whether or not they will be able to continue enjoying their regular activities. By working closely with your doctor and taking good care of your body through diet and exercise, you can prolong kidney function and feel better overall.

The two main causes of Chronic Kidney Disease in the United States are diabetes and high blood pressure. By controlling or preventing these diseases, you can help delay the onset of kidney failure. Since every case of CKD is different, making sure to discuss your exercise plans with your physician before starting will help you plan the best regular workout for your condition.

As you plan your treatment for CKD, keep in mind the following exercise tips:

• Strengthen your cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Even mild exercise like walking can help keep your heart healthy and your blood flowing smoothly. Discuss what level of workout is appropriate for you with your doctor, and plan to do a bit of cardiovascular activity every day. The lower you can keep your blood pressure, the healthier your kidneys will stay. Activities like gardening or digging in the sand are fun and heart healthy!

• Manage your diabetes. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help manage type 2 diabetes, a condition which affects how your body uses sugar in your blood. As you exercise, your body uses blood sugar to create energy, an action that lowers your overall blood sugar levels.

• Reduce stress. Because you are undergoing changes in your life and physical health, you might feel that you lack the energy or will to exercise. Research has shown that regular exercise helps produce endorphins, neurotransmitters that produce a feeling of well being and calm. Often, going for a walk and getting some fresh air can help you feel more peaceful. Other ideas might be to learn simple yoga stretches or signing up for an appropriate swimming class.

If you’re still not convinced, remember that regular exercise will help you lose weight and sleep better at night. Staying fit and rested will help you (and your kidneys) stay healthy!
