There are two main types of kidney dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis patients are trained to perform their dialysis at home. Hemodialysis patients must go to a dialysis center.
Your doctor will help you decide what the best treatment option is for your dialysis, based on your symptoms and whether you live alone or have family or friends who can help you.
If you are referred to a dialysis center for hemodialysis, you’ll need to think about what the most convenient location is for your treatment. Do you need to schedule around your place of employment? Be close to a school or relative’s house? What time of day would you most like to spend being dialyzed? Once you have decided what your most important criteria are, discuss different locations with your doctor and plan to visit a nearby center to discuss your needs.
Sometimes, the closest location will not have an opening that fits your schedule. Be willing to discuss other options and be flexible.
Decide whether you will want someone with you while your treatment is underway, and make sure that is possible at the center you choose.
