February is American Heart Month and March is National Kidney Month, with World Kidney Day on March 10.

"Protect your kidneys and save your heart" is the World Kidney Day theme, so we're focusing on the kidney-heart connection this year.

Whether you have kidney disease or not, you need to take care of your kidneys and your heart. Here are five simple ways to do this, from the Hope Heart Institute, one of our community partners.

  1. Get 30 minutes of brisk exercise daily.
  2. Stop smoking.
  3. Aim for a blood pressure of 120/80 or below.
  4. Eat a healthy amount of unsaturated fats.
  5. Be a good weight for your height — ask your dietitian or doctor what this is.
